CIOT - lame

Regulation Professional bodies stand accused of many things; rarely flattering and often true. The CIOT receives plenty of criticism and I have yet to hear a convincing rebuttal to the allegation that the institute is paid for by the many but is for the benefit of only the few; being the Big 4. The institute’s recent Finance Bill representations, devoting a disproportionately large amount of space to the SAddO provisions, being a case in point.
It was going to be interesting to see what the CIOT and other bodies did in response to the HMRC consultation document on working with agents. Would any of them, and most particularly the CIOT, having, as it does, an elevated podium on this particular issue, show some balls and challenge HMRC to get its own house in order before it has the temerity to have a pop at the professions ?
Well, now we know. The CIOT is going for an approach comprising lame with a dollop of bland, and a liberal sprinkling of kiss-ass thrown in for good measure. Very disappointing.
